Seattle, WA (PRWEB) April 18, 2009

The Autism Science Foundation, a new not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and funding autism research, launched its operations today, debuting its web site (http://www.autismsciencefoundation.org) and kicking off its “First 100 Days” fundraising drive with an announcement at the Association of Healthcare Journalists’ Annual Conference. The organization is co-founded by Alison Singer, formerly Executive Vice President of Autism Speaks, and Karen London, co-founder of the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR). Both Singer and London are parents of children with autism. Singer will serve as President of the new organization.

Singer resigned from Autism Speaks in January of this year, citing disagreement with the group’s decision to continue to fund more vaccine research despite multiple scientific studies exonerating vaccines as a cause of autism. “After I left Autism Speaks, I heard over and over from parents who said they needed an organization they could trust to fund nothing but the very best science; science that would open new doors and ask questions that have not yet been answered. That’s what we’ll do at the Autism Science Foundation.”

ASF’s mission is to support autism research by providing funding and other assistance to scientists and organizations conducting, facilitating, publicizing and disseminating autism research. The organization will also provide information about autism to the general public and will serve to increase awareness of autism spectrum disorders and the needs of individuals and families affected by autism.

“This organization will adhere to the rigorous scientific standards and values that defined NAAR during its 12 year, pre-merger history,” said London. “Outstanding research is the greatest gift we can offer our families. Every research dollar needs to count.” Founded in 1994, NAAR was the first nonprofit organization in the world dedicated to advancing autism research. In 2006, NAAR merged with Autism Speaks.

The Autism Science Foundation’s mission is premised on the following facts and principles:

Autism is known to have a strong genetic component. Research must aim to discover the mechanisms of action that trigger autism, as well as safe, effective and novel treatments to enhance the quality of life for children and adults currently affected.
Early diagnosis and early intervention are critical to helping people with autism reach their potential, but educational, vocational and support services must be applied across the lifespan. Science has a critical role to play in creating evidence-based, effective lifespan interventions.
Vaccines save lives; they do not cause autism. Numerous studies have failed to show a causal link between vaccines and autism. Vaccine safety research should continue to be conducted by the public health system in order to ensure vaccine safety and maintain confidence in our national vaccine program, but further investment of limited autism research dollars is not warranted at this time.

“We know more about autism than we did just a few years ago. For example, new discoveries in neuroscience, genetics, and epigenetics offer hope for improving the lives of people with autism,” said Dr. Edwin Trevathan, Director of CDC’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. “It is important that we apply these scientific advances to public health research to learn what causes autism spectrum disorders, how to treat autism, and eventually how to prevent autism-associated disability. As we all strive to follow where the science leads, the Autism Science Foundation will play an important role.”

“We need the most rigorous science to understand autism and develop new treatments,” said Dr. Tom Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Chair of the federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC). “I look forward to the Autism Science Foundation joining the public-private partnership described in the new strategic plan for autism research.”

“As we attempt to understand the causes of autism, and to develop optimal treatment programs, it is critical that parents have access to information that is based upon the best medical evidence,” said David T. Tayloe Jr., MD, FAAP, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, an organization of more than 60,000 pediatricians dedicated to the health, safety and well being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. “We welcome the chance to work closely with the Autism Science Foundation to improve the lives of children diagnosed with autism.”

Joining London and Singer on the Autism Science Foundation Board of Directors are Dr. Paul Offit, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and author of the critically acclaimed Autism’s False Prophets; Bad Science, Risky Medicine and the Search for a Cure, and Michael Lewis, attorney, mediator and grandfather of a child with autism. ASF’s Scientific Advisory Board, still in formation, includes Dr. Emanuel DiCicco-Bloom (UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; past program chair of the International Society for Autism Research); Dr. Ami Klin (Yale Child Study Center); Dr. Harold Koplewicz (NYU Child Study Center); Dr. Sharon Humiston (University of Rochester); Dr. Eric London (NYS Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities and co-founder of NAAR); Dr. Catherine Lord (University of Michigan); and Dr. Matthew State (Yale Medical School).

Jeanine joins other fashion & beauty icons like Vera Wang, Hollywould’s Holly Dunlap, Evelyn Lauder & Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau on Palm Beach Illustrated Magazine’s list … plus interior decorator/socialite Pauline Pitt, Tiffany & Co. design director John Loring, Giorgio Armani Beauty celebrity face designer Tim Quinn, jewelry designer Laura Munder & textile expert/style legend Iris Apfel … as well as notables like Donald and Ivanka Trump, Venus Williams, Tommy Lee Jones, Andy Roddick, Daniel Boulud, James Patterson, and Jack Nicklaus. It’s a veritable who’s who of the most successful leaders of fashion, beauty, industry & the arts.

To compile the list, Palm Beach Illustrated Magazine consulted a group of “respected and connected Palm Beachers from various social circles and walks of life, and asked them to nominate persons deserving of this recognition.” The selected honorees earned the most nominations from their peers, and were lauded with a glamorous party at the exclusive Brazilian Court Hotel.

“The individuals featured … embody a host of admirable qualities, among them generosity, style, success, influence, vision, and the power to bring about positive change,” writes Palm Beach Illustrated Magazine editor Daphne Nikopoulos. “They are the brightest stars in and around Palm Beach.”

This accolade is just the latest feather in Jeanine’s cap. Jeanine has also been featured and is regularly quoted in leading international publications such as WWD, Elle, Allure, ICN, CPC, Cosmetic World, Beauty Fashion, American Salon, Modern Salon, Happi, The Sydney Morning Herald, Palm Beach Post, Fashion Wire Daily, Beyond Beauty Paris & more.

This year the categories are as follows:

Previous winners include Chanel No.5 (best fragrance – feminine), Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely (best celebrity fragrance – feminine) and Guerlain (best fragrance house). The Basenotes awards offer a valuable insight into the preferences and opinions of Basenotes’ highly targeted audience of fragrance enthusiasts and for this reason the indie event has reached cult status not just among the online community, but amongst the industry professionals and retailers who also frequent the site. Basenotes’ editor, Danielle Osborne, says of the awards “it is always a very exciting time of year for us. It helps us to identify with our readers that little bit more by giving us an insight into what has captured their imaginations throughout the year. The response is always enthusiastic and we get a great deal of engaging correspondence regarding this event from a wide range of people – from the fragrance fan to the perfumer to the online retailer.”

One of these retailers is FragranceNet.com, who have partnered with Basenotes for the second time in the capacity of awards sponsors. We have had a strong partnership with Basenotes for several years now. FragranceNet.com values its association with Basenotes and its readers and appreciates all the individuals who take the time to vote for the awards each year. Their support is what makes our partnership with Basenotes such a great success.”

The Annual Basenotes Fragrance Awards traditionally offers a prize to a randomly selected voter and this year that prize is being offered by FragranceNet.com. A $ 250 gift certificate to spend on a selection of the thousands of products available at FragranceNet.com’s online store will be presented to the winner whose name will be drawn when the award results are announced. Voting for the awards is open from the 27th November until 31st December 2007, with both the results and the winner of the gift certificate being announced at the beginning of February 2008. Votes can be registered at http://www.basenotes.net/awards

Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) December 01, 2011

With its diverse climate, awe-inspiring beaches, and wide array of seldom-seen wildlife, it’s no surprise that more than two million visitors headed to Costa Rica in 2010. This number is expected to rise this year, as an ever-increasing number of travel deals to this tropical destination continue to lure visitors in search of luxury on a budget.

To help travelers best experience Costa Rica’s beauty and diversity without breaking the bank, Moon Costa Rica author Christopher P. Baker is offering ten helpful tips for how to travel, dine, and explore Costa Rica on a budget.

1. Stay in a hostel. Costa Rica has some great budget hostels, some of which (in San José) are located in beautiful, restored Modernist mansions. There are also budget backpackers’ hostels all over the country.

2. Take a bus for long-distance travel. Almost everywhere in Costa Rica is accessible by bus, and it should never cost more than about $ 15 (USD) to get anywhere.

3. Eat like a local at sodas, street-side stalls selling traditional Costa Rican dishes, where travelers can get a fixed lunch (casado) for as little as $ 3 to $ 5 (USD).

4. Travel taxi smart. Establish the price of a taxi ride before getting in the cab. Waiting to get to your final destination to inquire about the fare almost ensures being charged considerably more.

5. Buy Costa Rican coffee in bulk. For example, Café Britt in Heredia will pay the shipping costs to the USA or Canada if visitors buy twenty-five bags of coffee, chocolates, nuts, or Britt cookies, and mixing and matching is encouraged.

6. Travel in “Green Season”. Green Season is the Costa Rica Tourism Board’s preferred term for low season (May-Oct), when prices are reduced at hotels and even car rental agencies.

7. If based in San José for any length of time, rent an aparthotel—a self-catering unit that charges cents on the dollar compared to a normal hotel. By the beach, rent a villa—if traveling with family or a group of friends, visitors will enjoy significant savings over a hotel room.

8. When hungry, look for a Spoon restaurant. This restaurant chain specializes in serving delicious sandwiches, set meals, and desserts, all at bargain prices.

9. Buy crafts and souvenirs at the source. Not only will shoppers save money, they’ll be doing good by putting money directly into the hands of the artisans—many of whom are relatively poor (and sometimes even impoverished) indigenous people.

10. Buy produce and food from local markets. Visitors will have fun shopping like a Costa Rican, and be saving money. The Mercado Central in San José is a must-visit, but roadside produce stands can be found throughout the country.

To help travelers start saving for their next Costa Rica vacation, Moon Travel Guides is giving away one $ 500 Continental Airlines gift card to one lucky reader. Visit Moon.com for a chance to enter to win. Two runners up will receive copies of Moon Costa Rica.

Manhasset, NY (Vocus) July 22, 2009

People with schizophrenia have long received an inconsistent mix of treatments depending on where they lived and what doctors they saw. Now, the federal government has announced an innovative study to test the impact of the best available treatments and whether the interventions will reduce future episodes of schizophrenia and help young people get their brains and lives back on track.

The study, called RAISE, is a contract funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institutes of Health and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The government will fund $ 40 million over six years — of which about half is earmarked for scientists at The Zucker Hillside Hospital campus of The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The project will involve two independent teams of researchers, one being led by Zucker Hillside/Feinstein scientists and another at Columbia University’s New York State Psychiatric Institute.

The interventions include the latest pharmacological and psychosocial treatments; the study design includes doctors, patients, families and scientists who will weigh in on the interventions to identify what works and what doesn’t. Once the intervention package is complete, scientists will train doctors and other health professionals throughout the country and then test the treatments in small towns and big cities around the nation where one in every 100 young adults and their families are handed the devastating diagnosis. This brain illness can cause hallucinations, delusions and life-disrupting changes in thought, mood and behavior.

Studies have shown that people with schizophrenia generally do not get appropriate treatments early enough in the course of the disease and this may lead to a more disabling form of the illness. Symptoms generally appear in late adolescence or early adulthood, and can disrupt the normal course of life and derail even the smartest minds.

Traditionally, patients have been given an inconsistent variety of treatments and studies show that most people never make it back to where they were before the symptoms hit. No one really knows how early, consistent, state-of-the-art treatments will affect the course of this illness, and this federal initiative is the first attempt to figure it out. The teams will be led by John Kane, MD, chairman of psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, NY, and Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, of Columbia University. “This is novel because there has never been an attempt to study the impact of carefully integrated modern pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments in first-episode patients,” he said. “This project will give us strategies that may change the course of illness for patients early in the disease process. We have some promising approaches that need to be combined and then tested on individuals in many different kinds of settings.

“We have a sense of what treatments work, but these interventions haven’t been tested in an integrated approach. This study is uniquely designed to answer the question of how best to treat people in the early stages of schizophrenia,” added Dr. Kane, internationally known for his work in the treatment of schizophrenia patients.

Once the interventions are selected and people trained to deliver them in a consistent fashion, 200 newly-diagnosed patients will be identified and enrolled in the study. The scientists will follow the patients over time to see whether their symptoms improve and if their social and vocational functioning get better with the selected interventions. The group will be tested against patients participating in the study and receiving standard psychiatric care in community clinics around the country.

“Can we do a better job helping patients with a more comprehensive treatment package? We definitely think so,” said Dr. Kane. “We hope this study will not only help us to change the course and outcome of schizophrenia, but also to change the way that people think about this brain disease. We hope the study will demonstrate that schizophrenia can be effectively treated and managed so that individuals who experience its onset can have a high likelihood of recovering and doing many of the things that we all take for granted: going to school, working, having hobbies, friends and intimate relationships. We’re very excited about this opportunity.”

“This new initiative will help us determine whether intervention that is started early, incorporates diverse treatment and rehabilitation approaches, and is sustained over time, can make it possible for more people with schizophrenia to return successfully to work and school,” said NIMH Director Thomas R. Insel, M.D. “Moreover, the interventions being tested will be designed from the outset to be readily adopted in real-world health care settings and quickly put into practice.”

RAISE is a model example of how money from the Recovery Act can accelerate science related to public health problems and potentially benefit those citizens most in need.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) November 15, 2011

Canada’s first food-focused digital magazine – Eat In Eat Out Magazine (EIEO) is your one stop (gourmet) shop for delicious news and recipes that are fit to print. From chef and home-economist tested seasonal recipes to trustworthy restaurant reviews and chef interviews, EIEO is for anyone craving reliable, engaging content and who loves to cook at home or dine out.

Created and conceived by Lori Kennedy – the President of Avalon Custom Content, a custom content provider to the food industry spanning almost two decades, Eat In Eat Out Magazine reflects Kennedy’s love of cooking and dining. “You can never have too many recipes. Our recipes are approachable, simple and great tasting. Our content is not just for ‘super-foodies.’ Time-saving use of packaged goods as ingredients is not off-limits. It’s for real every-day cooks,” says Kennedy.

The inaugural, Holiday Entertaining issue will feature content (and a recipe) from Canadian celebrity chef Christine Cushing as well as a witty sign-off column from food personality, Denise Vivaldo. Kennedy has partnered with a network of home economists, recipe developers, food writers and top Canadian food bloggers to provide a unique voice in the digital food sphere. Amongst these, you’ll find Canadian food and wine writer Shari Darling, author of “Orgasmic Appetizers and Matching Wines,” who will be sharing some of her recipes in the Holiday issue.

The beauty of EIEO is that it is a truly digital creation with all of the benefits that follow; Kennedy has recreated the comfortable editorial format found in most print magazines while adding the interactive and engaging experience of embedded links, audio, videos, recipe searchability, archived back issues and contests.

With ‘Eat In’ covering off cozy nights spent at home, the ‘Eat out’ half of the magazine covers the scene beyond your doorstep by tapping into the regional expertise of food writers for restaurant reviews and chef features from across Canada. “We have created a simple 12-step ‘at a glance’ restaurant review that gets to the point quickly. What is the vibe, can I bring my kids, what kind of food, and how much?” says Kennedy.

“I feel very strongly that EIEO brings together marketers, food bloggers and consumers in a unique way. I am excited about exploring this new distribution method,” says Kennedy, adding, “Up until now, the printed vehicles we produce are mailed out and we rarely get any feedback from consumers. As an online publication, social media will play a key role in spreading the word, building a following, and creating a community of readers, bloggers and marketers that will be immediate and interactive. That’s very exciting.”

EIEO will be published quarterly with fresh, tasty content added regularly to whet your appetite for food news that will have you coming back for seconds.
